Part of many families' Christmas traditions is decorating the whole house with personalized Christmas ornaments, trinkets, tinsel, and reindeer. Strange Christmas Traditions

However there are some pretty strange Christmas traditions that take place all over the world.  For example in Catalonia a Caga Tio or ‘pooping log' tradition is widespread.  This Spanish custom centres on a hollowed out log, which is decorated with a face and given arms and legs, to look like an animal.  Starting on December 8th, this bizarre ritual involves feeding the log with sweets and nuts etc.  Then come Christmas Eve or Christmas day it's put into a fireplace and ordered to ‘poop' them all out.  What makes it even stranger is that it is encouraged to do so by being beaten with a stick and having songs sung to it!

Well here at findmeagift.com you don't have to beat us with a stick to get our Christmas goodies flowing out.  In fact all you have to do is click on our products and we'll despatch them straight to your door!  We're overflowing with Christmas present ideas!  With gifts to suit everyone, you could start your own tradition of getting all your Christmas shopping done in the same day and from the comfort of your own home too!

In Norway all brooms, mops and brushes in houses are hidden on Christmas Eve.  However this isn't because housework is banished at Christmas, but because Norwegian myths had most believing that witches and evil spirits came out, looking for the brooms to ride on!  But don't worry you can still unwrap a fabulous Henry the Desktop Hoover on Christmas morning!  This cute little Hoover is an adorable desktop version of the original Henry Vacuum Cleaner and is also available in a pink ‘Hetty' version.  Both are powered by 2 x AA batteries and will Hoover their little wheels off, picking up the crumbs from your desk.

In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, the roads are closed off on Christmas Eve so the people can roller skate to mass.  Hmm, not sure whether that wheeled festive craze would catch on here!  However there is one six wheeled phenomenon that was a huge hit back in the 80's and it's gloriously back again, to the excitement of grownups just as much as kids.

Yes, Big Trak is back!  This terrific tank still has all the same fabulous features, such as a programmable keypad on its back, the awesome looking blue Photon Cannon beam and a super set of stickers too.  It can perform 16 commands in one sequence, which is enough to manoeuvre it from the couch to whoever has the tin of chocolates and back again!

Slovakia and the Ukraine have one of the bizarrely messiest Christmas traditions.  A traditional Christmas dish called Loksa (made out of bread, poppy seed filling and water) is thrown up at the ceiling at the beginning of Christmas Eve dinner, by the head of the family.  The more of the mixture that sticks to the ceiling the better the crops will be for the family the following year.  Obviously this could get a bit messy for those gathered around the table, which is where the Pink Twilight Umbrella – Double Sided Colour Changing Star Umbrella would come in handy!

This gorgeous umbrella will dazzle the socks of everybody, including the person sheltered underneath it!  This is because this beautiful Twilight Double Sided Umbrella has fibre optic stars inside and out, which will give a stunning light show on both sides.  You can dance in the rain like a little ray of sunshine as your pretty umbrella phases through the colours of the rainbow.

What seems normal to some can seem odd to others.  Even simple things like enjoying Christmas in the sunshine.  Somehow Christmas decorations abroad just look so peculiar when bathed in glorious weather, especially when you're used to it being wintery at home.  Countries in the Southern Hemisphere, such as Australia and New Zealand are in the middle of their summer.  So naturally locals take to the beach for Christmas day!  If you're thinking of doing the same, but in colder climates, then why not kit everyone out with a super cosy Slanket this Christmas.

We've got an amazing range of Slankets to suit everyone.  There are Slankets for kids, for adults and even Double Slankets for couples, as well as handy Slanket Travel Blankets too!  All of which are available in a variety of fantastic colours and prints.  These wonderfully warm fleece blankets are machine washable and come with the convenience of sleeves.  This means that you can still make sandcastles, eat your Christmas dinner or simply sit and read on the beach!

Findmeagift.com stocks such a diverse range of gifts, from the usual to completely out of the ordinary.  So if you're looking for some more marvellous ideas for Christmas presents, then just get online and click away!

Question by kara s: Any suggestions on addressing parents and Christmas traditions?
Our current Christmas "traditions" look like this: Saturday before Christmas, we're with his parents and grandparents. Christmas Eve, we are with his parents and try to see my dad (divorced) and sister. Christmas day we see my mom, then his parents again at his aunt's house. I'm ready for us to have our own traditions, but need ideas on how to address it without hurting feelings, especially his parent's. I'd like to spend Christmas Eve at home, then visit with everyone sometime during the day on Christmas. How should I go about this?

Best answer:

Answer by patty_loves_to_travel
Just do it. Quit putting everyone else's desires and wishes before your own. You are hurting your own feelings by doing something you don't want to do and aren't your feelings important? I don't think this is selfish. Forever and a day I used to put everyone else's feelings before mine when it came to holidays, visiting, gifts, making time for family--and then the day came and I saw that all my self-sacrifice did not lead others to "self-sacrifice" on account of my feelings and it hurt like heck. Thing is it shouldn't. Self-sacrifice is unhealthy.

Why don't you just go away for Christmas? Find a town you would like to visit depending on what you can afford and then drive there and spend both days by yourselves. Why do Christmas & Christmas Eve have to be THE days when family members HAVE to visit with one another--wouldn't one of the other 363 days suffice? Actually, I would also take all other holidays off the family visiting day calendar while I was at it. That should still leave over 300 days for family visits.

Of course, you can always invite everyone to your house for Christmas. Just have everyone take a plate and make a potluck Christmas dinner out of it. Concerned about divorced parents? Divorced or not your parents are grown-ups and are old enough to have manners and be civil to one another for a few hours at their child's house. If they chose not to go then it is too bad for them. My husband's mom chose not to go to our baby shower with her new hubby--our shower was at my husband's aunt's house (father's sister) and we didn't particularly miss her. She got along fine with her ex-sister in law, but thought it would be awkward for her husband (even though he was re-married) and her ex-husband to be in the same room.....Whatever...

Tips for Starting New Christmas Traditions

Article by John Samuel

There are many reasons a family would wish to start new Christmas traditions. If your family has become larger as a result of marriage or the birth of children. Or if your family has become smaller as the result of a divorce or death. Many life milestones are the inspiration for changing Christmas traditions. Sometimes also the age of the participants weighs heavily on the type of Christmas traditions you have. A family with many young children will probably spend most of Christmas talking about Santa Claus and opening gifts. But a family with little or no small children will spend no time doing this.

When choosing new Christmas traditions, some families get very nervous. They may feel that if they change the tradition - they are "taking away" Christmas from certain family members. It is important to involve every family member in the decision to make a change to Christmas traditions. This way each family member feels they have had their input and they feel comfortable.

There are so many things a family can do on Christmas - besides opening gifts and eating a large meal. The possibilities are endless! If your family is very into athletic pursuits you could all go skiing or ice-skating or hiking. If you'd like to volunteer to help others in your community, there are many things you could do on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve. The most important thing is to find the Christmas traditions that serve you as a family and help you to feel that you have celebrated Jesus' birthday well and brought your family together on this very important day.

If you choose to change your family Christmas traditions this year, remember that you are just "trying out" a new tradition for this year. It doesn't mean you have to do this forever or even next year if you don't want to. Trying a new Christmas tradition can be both exciting and a little anxiety producing for some. Focus on finding Christmas traditions your entire family can enjoy - and you'll have a wonderful Christmas.

Family Christmas Traditions

Growing up at Christmas in Northern Georgia was a very special time for me. My brother and I were raised by our grandparents and though it was never actually considered a family Christmas tradition, every year we did the same things.

About two weeks before Christmas, my grandparents, my brother and I would all load up in my grandfathers Dodge Van and head to the Elijay Mountains for the day. We would buy different fruits, such as apples, bananas, oranges, grapefruits and nuts. We would buy different kinds of candies like Sugar Peppermint Sticks, Orange Slices and Mint Drops. After spending the whole day in Elijay shopping for these items, we would head home. The next morning we would wake early and start separating the fruits, candies and nuts equally into hundreds of paper bags. Once this was completed, my brother and I would write a note wishing Merry Christmas. These bags were distributed to all of people that attended church with us and also to anyone that we knew that was sick or not able to leave their homes. We would drive around looking for people who were living on the streets; these people were given bags also and invited to come spend Christmas with us at our Church. When my grandfather passed away several years ago, we stopped making the fruit bags, but I was a grown woman then with children of my own and wanted to teach my children the joy of giving at Christmas without expecting anything in return.

I started buying blankets all during the year, especially if I caught them on sale, as I couldn't afford to raise my children alone and spend hundreds of dollars in one week for blankets. A couple of days before Christmas we would bake cookies and cook a large pot of homemade chili. We would then load our blankets, our cookies, and our chili in my van. We would distribute all of these items to the homeless people we found on the streets. At times, our gifts would bring tears to a person's eyes. They were all so happy to have a warm meal and homemade cooking. It really made our Christmases.

My oldest daughter is grown now with children of her own and even though she doesn't buy the blankets every year. To this day, she does cook a pot of homemade chili and distributes it to the homeless in her hometown.

Christmas Traditions, Then and Now

Article by Ez-tracks

The Birth of Christmas Traditions

Throughout history, Christmas has been celebrated by different cultures in diverse ways. In ancient Babylon and Egypt, there were mid-winter festivals that honored the ancient gods. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia, a festival dedicated to Saturn, the god of peace and plenty. During this festival, which ran from December 17th to December 24th, public gathering places were decorated with flowers and gifts and candies were exchanged amongst slaves and masters. In Scandinavia, a period of celebration known as Yule was held each winter at the end of the growing season. During this time, the population feasted on the summer's bounty. The Celtic culture of the British Isles revered all green plants as symbols of fertility and contributed celebrations revolving around the decoration of homes with mistletoe and holly. New Christmas customs appeared in the Middle Ages. The most prominent of these was the carol. By the 14th Century, such Christmas songs had become associated with the religious observance of the birth of Christ. In Italy, a tradition developed of re-enacting the birth of Christ and the construction of nativity scenes. The tradition of celebrating Christmas by decorating an indoor tree was established by Queen Victoria of England, while the author Charles Dickens popularized the idea of having a Christmas feast through his writing.

Modern Customs - Christmas Photos and e-Cards

There are also many Christmas traditions that have developed in modern times. The modern American conception of Santa Claus as a secular figure was created by the writer Clement Moore in his poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas. The commercialization of Christmas started to take place around World War II when people had to shop far in advance to get gifts to soldiers overseas in time for the holiday. Thus, the extended Christmas shopping season was born. An even more modern tradition is sending Christmas e-Cards with Christmas photos of the family. This is a great way to reach out and communicate with friends about the changes in your family and spread holiday cheer from everyone. Some families even put humorous touches on the Christmas photos by dressing the family dog up in antlers!

The Latest Christmas Tradition - Ringtones Era

By far the most recent Christmas tradition is downloading Christmas ringtones to a cell phone. Whether you're downloading a classic carol like "Deck the Halls" sung by The Platters or a more contemporary, funky piece like James Brown's "Funky Christmas Millennium" you can't help but feel festive every time you hear Christmas ringtones on your cell phone. Having Christmas ringtones on your cell phone is also a good reminder that you have a long Christmas list and need to get out there shopping. It's also a great way to spread the spirit of the season amongst friends and co-workers and let them know that you are no Grinch!

Whatever Christmas traditions you choose to embrace, you can be content in the knowledge that each has a distinctive history and a special meaning to many people.

Creating New Christmas Traditions

christmas recipes, Christmas Traditions, family tradition, holiday recipe, holiday traditions, homemade candy Making new Christmas traditions is a valuable way to cope with the first Christmas after the death of a loved one, or yif ou’ve just married into a new family. Creating new family traditions is also a good way to stay healthy at Christmas.

New Christmas Traditions: Christmas Volunteering

Volunteering at Christmas is an excellent new family tradition at Christmas. Investigate the “traditional” Christmas volunteering ideas: food banks, Meals on Wheels, Christmas hampers, etc. Consider making Christmas volunteering a less traditional holiday tradition, such as making simple Christmas stockings with your family and delivering them to street kids or a youth shelter. A new Christmas family tradition could include visiting sick kids in the hospital or donating toys, books or needed items to the Ronald McDonald House or a women’s shelter. Always call first. Christmas volunteering makes you feel good about yourself and your family – even if you’re grieving a death at Christmas.

New Christmas Traditions: Christmas Recipes

Creating Christmas traditions should ways involve food! Spend time with your kids, partner, parents or loved ones in the kitchen, baking Christmas cookies or decorating gingerbread houses. Pick a holiday recipe that you only make at Christmas – perhaps homemade candy canes will be your new holiday tradition – and invite friends and family to help make them.

New Christmas Traditions: Christmas Ornaments

New family traditions include making different Christmas ornaments from scratch every year, such as popsicle stick picture frames or popcorn wreaths. Christmas ornaments can become holiday traditions even if you add a new variation each year. For instance, put new family photos in Christmasy picture frames; every year, line them up on the mantle or bookcase. If you don’t have time to make Christmas ornaments but like this idea of creating new Christmas traditions, consider purchasing instead of making a new ornament every year.

New Christmas Traditions: Christmas Stories

Make your family story a new tradition at Christmas. Keep copies of your annual family Christmas card or letter, and read them out loud each Christmas. Or, read squo;Twas the Night Before Christmas or e Best Christmas Pageant Ever out loud to your kids the night or week before Christmas. Holiday traditions are about you as a unique family, warts and all. Sometimes new Christmas traditions start by accident and continue unattended; other times, you have to deliberately implement your new Christmas traditions. Either way, holiday traditions are a reassuring, fun, and healthy way to celebrate Christmas.
