Question by Rusty Tater ©: Will you celebrate this Christmas with a Yule Log or an Ashen Faġġot?
The Ashen Faġġot is a very old Westcountry tradition that at one time was widely seen on Dartmoor. The custom is considered to date back to Saxon times, however it is thought to have come from Scandinavia who at their feast of 'joul' would burn huge bonfires in honour of their god Thor. The ash tree was regarded as the 'tree of life' in Norse mythology. Sabine Baring Gold in his novel 'Glámr' describes an early instance of the tradition:

"Christmas Eve! How different in Saxon England! There the great ashen faġġot is rolled along the hall with torch and taper; the mummers dance with their merry jingling bells; the boar's head with gilded tusks, "bedecked with holly and rosemary," is brought in by the steward to a flourish of trumpets."

The custom was that a faġġot (bundle of ash sticks) was bound with nine green lengths of ash bands or 'beams', preferably all from the same tree. The 'Christianised version of the use of ash was that it was the wood that Mary used to light the fire in order to wash Jesus. In Romany lore it was thought that Jesus was born in a field and that he was kept warm by the heat of an ash fire. The holly, ivy and pine trees hid the infant and were allowed to keep their foliage all year where as the oak and the ash showed where he was hiding and they were condemned to die every winter. On Christmas Eve the faggot was put on a fire that had been lit with the remnants of the previous years faggot. Everybody would then gather around the hearth and eagerly watch it burn. Any unmarried woman that was present would each chose one of the green bands and it was believed that the woman who selected the first band it ignite and break would be the next to get married. In some places, every time a binding band broke a a quart of cider would be passed around and a toast would be made. It was believed that any household that did not burn the ashen faggot would be in for a years worth of bad luck and misfortune.

An Important Battle is Won in the War on Christmas
Wal-Mart Will Stop Censorship of Ads and Greetings

Orlando, FL - Wal-Mart has finally admitted that censoring Christmas is not a good idea. After experiencing a backlash last Christmas season from unhappy customers and facing frustrated employees, some of whom turned to Liberty Counsel for help, Wal-Mart retreated from its use of "Happy Holidays" and will let employees greet shoppers with "Merry Christmas."

"We, quite frankly, have learned a lesson from last year," said spokeswoman Linda Blakely of Wal-Mart in an interview with USA Today news. Blakely claims Wal-Mart will say "Merry Christmas" early and often. Wal-Mart will be playing Christmas carols now through the end of the year.

The world's largest retailer told its associates at a recent conference that it will bring back the Christmas pitch in an attempt to be the leader in this year's sales. Wal-Mart's advertising will announce "Christmas" and its decorations department will change from "The Holiday Shop" to "The Christmas Shop."

Liberty Counsel, a nationwide, public interest civil liberties law firm, launched its fourth annual "Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign" this year and is already receiving many consumer complaints about stores refusing to recognize the Christmas holiday. On its web site, www.LC.org, Liberty Counsel offers a Help Save Christmas™ action pack, which includes educational legal memoranda to educate government officials, teachers, parents, students, private businesses, employees and others that it is legal to celebrate Christmas. The action pack also includes a very popular "I LOVE CHRISTmas™" button.

Anita Staver, President of Liberty Counsel, commented: "We are glad that Wal-Mart stopped censoring Christmas. Wal-Mart should have realized it cannot censor Christmas and would have avoided the wrath of the public. To those that claim there is no war against Christmas in America, Wal-Mart is 'Exhibit A' in our 'Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign'. We are having a tremendous response when we ask the public to report a 'grinch' in their community. Wal-Mart has been removed from our 'grinch' list."

Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, noted: "Last year our 'Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign' ignited a movement to restore Christmas. Retailers that attempt to profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist will no longer be patronized. The tsunami of voices fed up with the secularization of Christmas was heard loud and clear, from city hall to the world's largest retailer. I am pleased that Wal-Mart will recognize Christmas this year. Now that the number one retailer has abandoned its generic 'Happy Holidays' greeting in favor of 'Merry Christmas,' other retailers no longer have an excuse to run from Christmas."

Question by Bella Swan: Hey does this sound like a good young adult novel?
As I sat in the middle of my room boxes surrounded me. I was debating to take my winter jackets because, honestly I don't think I would need them in hottest state in the country."The boxes won't pack themselves."my father said in the door way. "I know but, when you don't want to leave it makes it harder."."Then why are you?"he said while taping up an old box of corny christmas decorations. "I don't want to Dad, I have to. I have to do this for me.". He just shook "I am sorry for what happened to you Kelsey but, you shouldn't let it take over your life."."Dad please I really dont want talk about this i just want to move and forget about everything this year."."Okay.Night"he said. What I said was the truth I was going to miss my friends, my dad, and the small Minnesota town i had lived in my whole entire life but, the memories were to hard for me to deal with. The past is the past and that is where it should stay I thought to myself and dozed off to sleep.

Sorry, but what that sounds like is a paragraph in a novel. What is the premise of the novel?

All I get from it is that a young girl is leaving town because of something that happened, and she's going somewhere as opposite to it as she can.

Sure, what happened is part of the story; you've created some suspense there. But the rest of the book will be about where she's going and what she finds there or what she does. So what's the rest of the book about? No way to tell if it's a good idea without knowing something about that.

{Frankly, Bella Swan, it sounds like an inverted Twilight, which makes me really wonder what you have in mind!)

The state of the financial sector being what it is, many individuals are feeling the impact of what could well be a problematic few years. Now is the time to keep the communication channels open with your friends, relatives and loved ones. The web is a wonderful tool but it doesn’t have the tangible feel of a scribed letter or card that gives you a burst of colour that you can keep to re read again wherever you are.

With Christmas just round the way its worth thinking about the purchase of Charity Christmas Cards to benefit people in a less fortunate situation and contact your friends and family in a blast of colour. There isn’t anything like getting a colourful envelope through the letter box with your details on it. Charity Christmas cards are a nice way to say to the people you care about what you are feeling.

Specifically this year it is very important to stay in touch and help the friends you are close to and if you can help charities in the same instance all the better. Lets be honest its going to be hard for a lot of people in the next few years, for people in a less fortunate position its going to be even tougher. People need to understand that you care and by simply writing your words of support this Xmas to your friends and families you can make friends feel better about life.

Charity Christmas Cards are a very nice way of being a decent human being and by doing so, supporting the friends around you and people that will never be able to show you there appreciation for your Good decision.

I work in SEO and love the variety the job provides me with.

Your friends, relatives and neighbors are eagerly looking forward to your annual Christmas photo cards.  But how do you make this year's holiday card really fresh and original? Here are seven ideas to help you make your new photo Christmas cards stand out.

1. Go black and white photo for a dramatic look.  Many digital cameras have a setting that will enable you to take your photo in black and white. Or you can change a color snapshot to grayscale in your photo editing software. If you don't know how to do it yourself, most photo card companies can do it for you at no extra charge.

2. The more, the merrier.  This year, include more than just the kids in your photo Christmas cards.  Get in the picture with them!  One year my uncle remarked that while he enjoyed receiving a photo of the kids every year, he would like to see a picture of us, too. So, gather the entire family, even the pets.  And if you have an opportunity during the year to attend a large family get together with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, you might consider using a large group family photo.

3. Pack the Santa hat on vacation. Whether you're going to the beach, sightseeing in the city or pumpkin picking in the fall, bring along a holiday prop or two, such as a Christmas stocking or ornament.  When you're taking photos of your family excursion, include a few with everyone holding or wearing the Christmas props for refreshingly different holiday photo.

4. Think personality.  While you might enjoy a posed photo of your children all cleaned up, in nice clothes, with not even a hair out of place, it doesn't show off their real personalities.  For more interesting photo Christmas cards, try taking some candid photos of your kids doing things they enjoy.  Or pose them with props that reflect their interests or accomplishments.

5. Scrapbook a page.  If you're creative, you can put together several cropped photos and your greeting on holiday background paper, then photograph or scan it to be used as your photo Christmas card.  Since most photo card companies use 4 x 6 inch photos to produce your cards, trim a standard 12 x 12 inch scrapbooking page to 12 inches wide by 8 inches high as your background for your layout.

6. Embellish it.  Even if you have already ordered standard photo Christmas cards, you might still be able to jazz them up a bit.  Check out the scrapbooking aisles in your local craft store for tiny embellishments, such as bows, ribbons, and other holiday dimensional items.  These are practically flat, since they are meant for a scrapbook page, so they will still fit into your envelope after you glue them on your cards.

7. Shop around.  There are so many photo Christmas card companies on the internet that are offering unique, original, personalized designs.  Some designs can even contain multiple photos, so you don't have to worry about getting that one perfect snapshot.  Or they will put your photo into the shape of an ornament, tree, or other holiday symbol.  Many companies will let you write your own message, so you have more choices and options.  They come in all price ranges, so it pays to do some browsing.

So, don't be afraid to try something a little different with your photo Christmas cards this year.  With a little imagination, your holiday photo cards will be truly special.

Let's face it.  For those of us who want to send Christian Christmas cards, there seems to be less choice than ever before. The card stores at the mall offer holiday greetings covered with glittering ornaments, Santa and lots of holly.  Yet it's getting harder to find a good selection of religious Christmas cards in local shops.  What can you do if you want a unique card to express your belief in the true meaning of Christmas?  Here are seven creative ideas to help your share your Christian faith this Christmas season.

1. Shop online.  Don't limit yourself to brick and mortar stores that stock only the most popular holiday designs and themes in order to boost profits.  Search the internet and you'll find it is filled with many niche' markets that offer specialized items.  There are online stores that sell exclusively Christian products, including Christmas cards, as well as traditional holiday card websites that offer a wide selection of religious Christmas cards.

2. Enclose a bookmark.  You can still choose a standard Christmas card with a beautiful green wreath on the cover, but slip a bookmark inside with a Christian message.  You can find these in Christian book stores and online.  There are even websites that will create inexpensive custom bookmarks for you.  These can be personalized with your favorite Bible verse or even a family photo.

3. Mail a magnet.  There are many companies that make personalized thin, flat, easy to mail magnets of all sizes.  They will add your message, Bible verse and sometimes even a photo.  You can send these to everyone on your Christmas card list and it will still be on their refrigerator long after the holiday is gone.

4. Send photo Christmas cards.  There are photo card companies on the internet that feature religious photo Christmas cards.  They incorporate a Christian message and design with your photo and personalization.  If you don't find a business that specifically makes Christian photo Christmas cards, then locate one that will let you include a slightly longer personalization.  This way you can add your favorite Bible verse and Christian message.  Let everyone on your holiday list see the joy of the Lord in your family's faces.  People tend to hold on to photo Christmas cards long after they've discarded the traditional paper greetings.  So, your message will remain.

5. Make it yourself.  If you haven't found just the right Christmas card for your family, it's easy to make your own card.  First pick a large colorful background using scrapbook paper, wrapping paper or even construction paper.  Cut out photos of your family, your children's drawings or pictures from magazines or other sources. On a paper that compliments your background color, write or use your printer to print your message.  Arrange all of your elements on the background and when you're happy with their placement, use a glue stick to keep them there.  Then to mass-produce them, you have two choices.  You can scan the finished product and then print it on your home printer.  Or you can use your digital camera and take a photo of it and upload it to a website that will print it for you.  This can be a fun holiday project for the whole family.

6. Include your testimony.  Whether you send traditional holiday cards or religious Christmas cards, you can include a printed account of how God has touched your life.  It doesn't have to be your whole life story to have impact.  In fact, you can simply share an example of how God answered a prayer for you this past year.  Many people send Christmas newsletters heralding their family's annual accomplishments.  Instead, consider letting others know what the Lord has accomplished.  You never know whose life it might touch.

7. Pray for each person, as you seal their envelope. Instead of dreaming of wintery weather with each Christmas card you write, lift up that person to the care of the Lord and ask His blessing in their life.  The person who receives your Christmas card may have no idea you prayed for them as you were writing it, but it is a meaningful way to put your beliefs into action.

So, don't limit your choice to the handful of religious Christmas cards that you find in your local store, when there are many creative ways to express your faith during the holidays.  This year, make your Christian Christmas card a unique, personal message from your heart that proclaims the true reason for the season.
