Question by I2294: Why do news channels refer to last minute Christmas shopping, as "holiday shopping"?
I'm watching the news, and EVERY channel refers to last minute Christmas shopping, as "holiday" shopping? Why don't they just say "Christmas"....how is saying "Christmas" offensive to anyone? People are not doing "holiday in general" shopping, they are doing "Christmas shopping"...Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, there is nothing offensive or politically correct about it...

Any thoughts? Please explain...

almost every single media in USA has this order not to mention MERRY XMAS if they want to keep there jobs.

every year close to XMAS the only news who has to guts to say the actual word Merry Xmas is channel 11 on no spin zone by Bill O'rilay , he is the one who fights toe to toe with ACLU . and also the argument that most department store are not allow to return customers remarks as far as when they say Merry Xmas all they allow to respond is happy holidays or same to you.

but the department store will take that jolly XMAS money so fast.

The tradition of sending greeting cards dates to the 1700’s.  An excellent opportunity to stay connected with those you don’t see often enough, greeting cards also offer a thoughtful way to let others know you value them as friends, customers and business associates.

When selecting which card to send, it is important to remember that not everyone celebrates the holidays in the same way.  There very real differences that should be considered during the season as an inappropriate greeting card, though sent under the best of intentions, can actually do more harm than good, especially in a business relationship.  Here are some points of greeting card etiquette to consider.

Christmas Cards are perfect for friends and family when you know their religious affiliation and feel comfortable sending a greeting with a clear Christian message.  Images depicting the Madonna and child or designs and sentiments that speak to Christian beliefs are lovely and clearly send a message that speaks to the birth of Christ.  These recipients are certain to appreciate warm Christmas cards and religious greetings more than the generic “Season’s Greetings.”  If you are at all unsure about an affiliation, consider a greeting less focused on the religious meaning of Christmas.

Holiday Cards are more non-denominational and come with sentiments such as “Season’s Greetings” or “Happy Holidays” that can be enjoyed by all.  Particularly in a business environment, it is much more acceptable to send a heartfelt wish for the season in holiday cards designed to acknowledge the season more so than a special event.

For example, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate any holidays while Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 to January 1 by many African-Americans.  Muslims celebrate two feast holidays during November and December and Hindus celebrate Diwali during the winter months of October or November.

Holiday cards recognize all celebrations during the season without offending anyone’s cultural or religious differences.  This is especially significant in the world of international business where you will also want to consider the holiday schedules of your business partners as many take extended time off.  A greeting card sent before their offices close for the holidays would be enjoyed and would set your card apart from those cards that stack up awaiting their return.

Thanksgiving Cards have become new alternatives to the seasonal holiday or Christmas greeting card.  Enjoyed by all Americans, they can be a nice surprise, arriving in advance of the traditional holiday cards.  Thanksgiving cards will also remain on display far longer.

No matter which greeting card you send, remember to make it of high quality and take the time to sign it in your own handwriting, even if they are personalized.  Your thoughtful gesture is certain to be returned in customer loyalty, strengthening business partnerships and connections with friends and family.

Your friends, relatives and neighbors are eagerly looking forward to your annual Christmas photo cards.  But how do you make this year's holiday card really fresh and original? Here are seven ideas to help you make your new photo Christmas cards stand out.

1. Go black and white photo for a dramatic look.  Many digital cameras have a setting that will enable you to take your photo in black and white. Or you can change a color snapshot to grayscale in your photo editing software. If you don't know how to do it yourself, most photo card companies can do it for you at no extra charge.

2. The more, the merrier.  This year, include more than just the kids in your photo Christmas cards.  Get in the picture with them!  One year my uncle remarked that while he enjoyed receiving a photo of the kids every year, he would like to see a picture of us, too. So, gather the entire family, even the pets.  And if you have an opportunity during the year to attend a large family get together with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, you might consider using a large group family photo.

3. Pack the Santa hat on vacation. Whether you're going to the beach, sightseeing in the city or pumpkin picking in the fall, bring along a holiday prop or two, such as a Christmas stocking or ornament.  When you're taking photos of your family excursion, include a few with everyone holding or wearing the Christmas props for refreshingly different holiday photo.

4. Think personality.  While you might enjoy a posed photo of your children all cleaned up, in nice clothes, with not even a hair out of place, it doesn't show off their real personalities.  For more interesting photo Christmas cards, try taking some candid photos of your kids doing things they enjoy.  Or pose them with props that reflect their interests or accomplishments.

5. Scrapbook a page.  If you're creative, you can put together several cropped photos and your greeting on holiday background paper, then photograph or scan it to be used as your photo Christmas card.  Since most photo card companies use 4 x 6 inch photos to produce your cards, trim a standard 12 x 12 inch scrapbooking page to 12 inches wide by 8 inches high as your background for your layout.

6. Embellish it.  Even if you have already ordered standard photo Christmas cards, you might still be able to jazz them up a bit.  Check out the scrapbooking aisles in your local craft store for tiny embellishments, such as bows, ribbons, and other holiday dimensional items.  These are practically flat, since they are meant for a scrapbook page, so they will still fit into your envelope after you glue them on your cards.

7. Shop around.  There are so many photo Christmas card companies on the internet that are offering unique, original, personalized designs.  Some designs can even contain multiple photos, so you don't have to worry about getting that one perfect snapshot.  Or they will put your photo into the shape of an ornament, tree, or other holiday symbol.  Many companies will let you write your own message, so you have more choices and options.  They come in all price ranges, so it pays to do some browsing.

So, don't be afraid to try something a little different with your photo Christmas cards this year.  With a little imagination, your holiday photo cards will be truly special.
