Christmas Catalog

What Is A Christmas Catalog?

Many older people remember when they were young children, and how much they looked forward to getting the Christmas catalog in the mail. Companies such as woolworths, Marks & Spencers, WH Smith besidesmany other large department stores mailed out their special holiday catalogues a month or two before the Christmas holidays. Children are always excited when these arrived. They would spend hours and hours combing the pages of the toy zone in these catalogues or as they got older the clothes section. Many would fold the corners of the pages or find another way of marking a coveted present.

This does not happen so frequently these days with the introduction of computers, the internet, and online ordering. However, some larger toy stores will still send out a Christmas catalogue through the mail. These catalogues delight young of all ages when they arrive at their houses. You may notice plentiful dog eared copies of these holiday catalogues at the homes of friends aand your relatives the weeks before Christmas. Just like their parents or grandparents, they will also mark pages containing presents that they would like to peg below the tree on Christmas morning bearing their names.

Whilst these books were widely perused, there were also other uses for a Christmas catalog. Following Christmas, programmes like Blue Peter helped turn them into elite items using certain crafts. They were turned into such things as doorstops, or used to cut pictures from for a collage picture. It seemed that these books became quite handy for many things that had nothing to do with finding and ordering gifts. Many children will still actively try to obtain catalogues in order to utilise them for crafting.

It is often a bit disheartening that many companies depend on the internet or small flyers nowadays, rather than sending out a Christmas catalogue. This is truly one of the favorites from the past that is missed by many who experienced the feel of receiving these catalogues. There are some mail order companies that also issue holiday catalogues, but these seem to only be available to businesses, rather than private individuals. That is perfectly understandable from a business view point, but it is still rather sad that you can’t get these catalogues at home.

It does seem as if the true Christmas catalog has been replaced by small flyers from conglomerates local superstores. While these are fun to look at, it just isn’t the same as having a huge 500 page book brimming with items to choose presents from. You can glance through these flyers in a matter of minutes, while it would take bounteous pleasure filled hours to pore over the catalogs of the past. Maybe this can become a thing of the future also if enough persons start requesting them.

If I could work my will," said Scrooge indignantly, "every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should! (Charles Dickens)
